Pen motion not recognised on Surface Pro 3
« on: April 11, 2016, 01:06:34 am »
I'm trying to use Tablet Pro to navigate inside Blender using 'Artist Pad' by assigning a touch key to 'Alt + Middle Click' so that I can press the touch key and wave my Surface Pro 3 pen across the screen to move the view. It doesn't recognise that the pen is hovering above the screen though, but it works when i move the mouse around. I've turned on all the 'use touch and pen simultaneously' settings where i can find them. Any ideas?

JoshB,
I have SP3 as well. I find that hover modes with the pen are only detected when the pen has touched the screen once and or you are close enough to get the circular cross hair. Then you can hover the pen from the screen about 0.5 cm (at ~ 1cm the pen looses detection with the display). You can then press the TabletPro hotkey to initiate middle click + alt.

IF you touch the TabletPro Artist pad key first and then bring the pen into range of the display the pen will not initialize, As windows has taken the touch as the primary interface cursor. You will have to release the Artist pad key so the pen will initialize the cursor and then you will be able to press the key.

Do you find this happens?

thanks for the reply Julian!

I've tried your technique and no such luck I'm afraid :( I put the pen very close to the screen and then pressed the Tablet Pro shortcut button and nothing happened. I tested the other buttons (the Ctrl and Shift shortcuts) and they functioned normally, I was able to hold them while hovering the pen over the screen and the object I was moving around was affected, so the pen is definitely being recognised as a cursor before it's in range.

joshb,
How have you got the key set up in tablet pro?
are you able to send screen shot?
i'm just about to install blender and experiment with real mouse keyboard and then replicate function in tabletpro.

Just installed Blender and...
Control + Middle Click = Zoom
Shift + Middle Click = Pan
Middle click = Orbit.
Alt + Middle Click = ???

I had a look and i'd used Alt instead on Shift for the 'move' function, i set it back to default and then tried different combinations on differt Tablet Pro buttons but same issue as before :(

JoshB,
I believe you have to use, Frame with Mdrag for the function to work.

Frame means you will not use the pen,
where as Middle Mouse plus shift = use pen in hover mode.

Thanks Julian, that's very helpful, the implementation works, but will take some getting used to, thanks so much for your help.

Hopefully they will update Tablet Pro to enable pen + shortcuts

JoshB,
Both implementations work. Frame(M-Drag) touch finger only as well as middle mouse + shift and pen. As demo in video above.
Are you able to show what mode you were trying to use?

Here are the two types of setup l have for the buttons. As far as I can see they have the same set up as you demo'd in the video.
the (Frame) one works but the pen one doesn't do anything.

I tested the middle-click button (not the Frame one) on a webpage and it only worked after I took the pen away from the screen, then the scroll arrows came up, when I put the pen back near the Screen, the scroll arrows stopped showing up.

Oh, just me putting my pen over a webpage to test the middle mouse touch button, it was just to test if scrolling was possible on any webpage, it only worked when i moved the mouse.

in chrome i get scrolling with middle mouse and pen, however it is a toggle function when active.

I am sure you have activated the same setting under artist pad mode.
However in saying that with SP3 having the multi pen touch  options ticked or unticked makes no difference to behavior for me anyway on WIN10 Build 14316.rs1, TabletPro v2.0.0.3

Yep, followed along with your vid, all settings the same, the point where you tap on the screen and then press the button and wave the pen around is where the process stopped working for me. I'm using v2.0.0.7
